Should you be Using Tax Preparation Software?
By: J.Morgan
With tax time coming around again, you might be thinking about how and when to file your taxes. If you’re dreading having to prepare and file a tax return, here’s some good news: there are now several different options for filing your taxes, including online filing, and tax preparation software that makes the whole process much easier.
Tax preparation software is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to spend any more time than they need to on filing tax returns. The software helps you combine your notes, forms, deductions and receipts to file your claim either electronically or by mail. It can make tax preparation quicker and easier, saving you both time and money. There’s no need to visit an accountant or tax agent, as the software already "knows" how to calculate your taxes using the information you input. There are plenty of other great reasons to use tax preparation software, too.
Tax preparation software will save you money. It’s less expensive than hiring someone to prepare your taxes for your, and in some cases the price of the software is deductible.
Using software is quicker and more convenient than hiring a professional. You can get the job done in your own home, and there’s no need to make an appointment.
You have the opportunity to get involved in managing your own finances, and to learn about tax issues.
You may avoid missing deductions that might save you money or increase your refund.
Using software will prevent calculation errors that might result in complications or even an audit after you file your taxes.
Tax preparation software is fairly inexpensive, with programs ranging in price from $14 to $200. The price you pay for the software depends on the type of taxes you’re filing, including whether you want the software to complete federal taxes only, or both federal and state tax returns. They’re designed to be easy to install and operate, too, so you don’t need an expert level of knowledge to use them.
Most software programs work in a similar fashion: after installation the program will prompt you to answer a series of questions. You’ll fill in your personal information, and details about your employment and income. When that’s done, the software will guide you step-by-step through the process of filling out your tax return, and tell you what information to enter. At the end of the process, the program will calculate how much you owe, or the size of your rebate. It couldn’t be easier!
With the low price of tax preparation software and the many benefits of using it, it’s easy to see why the software is becoming so popular. Inexpensive, easy to use, and virtually foolproof, it’s a great way of making sure your taxes are completed correctly. If you haven’t filed your taxes yet this year, it’s definitely worthwhile considering using this type of software.
